UK & Netherlands Embrace A Month Of Solo Shows

(SOMEWHERE, Over The Atlantic) Winging his way back from a month of dates, acclaimed singer-songwriter Fred Eaglesmith offered European fans a typically multi-faceted experience. Intimate solo acoustic sets mixed his celebrated and oft-covered songs with comedic post-political stump speeches and general ribaldry. And the praise has been effusive.

Glasgow, Scotland’s Herald raved about Fred’s “two shows for the price of one” approach: “The transition from wounding wit to hard-bitten, spare strumming troubadour is seamless … Eaglesmith’s main strength as a songwriter is his sincerity, with sentiments distilled to the bare honest essence.”

Eaglesmith gets his strongest response in the Netherlands, where he was subject of a feature film titled There Ain’t No Easy Road. “My father was born in Holland and my uncle died there in World War II, so I have this connection and totally identify with the Dutch,” Fred says. “This guy approached me about making a movie of my ‘return’ there in 2008. It was a feature they showed in theaters and it gave me a great big leg up.”

Fans in Holland get a healthier than normal dose of Eaglesmith’s unique sense of humor. “I tease the Dutch all the time about being so tall by natural selection because they all know they’re going to get flooded again,” he chuckles. “There’s a kind of cookie over there I relate to cows. They keep their food in the wall and a lot of it is mystery meat. They get a lot of grief from me.”

Planes, trains and a vegetable oil-powered bus will continue bringing the Fred Eaglesmith experience to fans worldwide, with North American dates commencing Feb. 28 in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
