Regenerative Living/Hemp Expert Doug Fine

To Speak at SXSW 2022

(LOS ANGELES) On March 16, hemp/regenerative living expert, author, and speaker Doug Fine will speak during the Climate Change Track of the renowned South-by-Southwest (SXSW) Conference in Austin, Texas.

In “What You, I, and Anyone Can Do to Mitigate Climate Change,” Fine will explain, with humor and passion, how regenerative hemp farmers are helping rescue the planet from climate change—and that absolutely anyone can contribute to what he calls a “biomaterials renaissance.”

“Anyone can grow hemp and other food crops in their yards, on their roofs, in community gardens,” Fine says, adding that even a small home garden can sequester tons of atmospheric carbon dioxide, which contributes to reducing global climate change.

The SXSW session comes as Fine kicks off the new year with a full slate of appearances. Throughout January, Fine will speak at the 2022 Pasa Sustainable Agriculture Conference in Lancaster, Penn., the Northeast Organic Farmers Association’s Winter Convention in New York, and the online event Hemp OpenSpace. Fine will also appear virtually at Florida’s Cannabiziac Book of the Month Club to discuss his book, American Hemp Farmer (Chelsea Green, 2020).

TV Series in development and available for distribution.

These are only a few of the upcoming stops on Fine’s endless ”Johnny Hempseed” journey to teach the citizens of Earth how to help heal the planet. Dressed head-to-toe in hemp clothes—including hemp boxers made by his sweetheart—and toting a 3D-printed, compostable, hemp-plastic goat to demonstrate the plant’s versatility as a biomaterial, his appearances always garner great reviews, his appearances always garner great reviews.

“[Doug Fine] is always our first booking, around which we build the whole event,” say Montana State Hemp Festival founders Erin and Shelly Crowbar. “His humor and truth work in perfect harmony with the musical acts and the crowd loves it. What’s more, they remember it.”

Following his SXSW address, Fine will return to the NoCo Hemp Expo in Denver on March 24 & 25. And Fine’s keynote address from last December at the Acres USA 50th Anniversary Eco-Ag Conference will air on C-SPAN soon.

Engaging, funny, and informative, Fine has emceed or spoken at hundreds of events since releasing his first book, Not Really an Alaskan Mountain Man, in 2004. He has also appeared on TV (Conan, The Tonight Show, CNN), given a TED talk (“Why We Need Goatherding in the Digital Age” at TEDxABQ), and even testified before the United Nations regarding “the right to farm whatever a farmer pleases.”

Whether through the spoken or written word, Fine reaches people. And he’s constantly finding new ways to deliver his message, including through American Hemp Farmer, an in-development TV docuseries based on his award-nominated book.

Fine seeds the series with all of the adventure, comedy, drama, and growth of his travels and experiences, making a compelling and entertaining case for hemp as a part of the solution to climate change. And, with his trademark wit and wisdom, he teaches that the regenerative lifestyle isn’t beyond the average person. “If I can do it,” says the erstwhile suburbanite, “anyone can.”

In the series, Fine takes us with him to the Rosebud Sioux tribal lands, advising a Tribal enterprise on its organic hemp cultivation. In other episodes, Fine visits George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate and manually harvests in Colonial-style hemp clothes. He also conducts virtual interviews with the researchers who will bring hemp food to the International Space Station.

Fine and his co-producers are currently seeking distribution for the American Hemp Farmer series. Looking beyond that, Fine is developing more television series and film ideas, including an adaptation of his book Too High to Fail. And, of course, more Doug Fine books are in the works.

In the book American Hemp Farmer, Fine explains the urgency that prompts him to leave his solar-powered regenerative hemp farm at his idyllic Funky Butte Ranch in New Mexico to preach about hemp. “We’re in the bottom of the ninth with two outs when it comes to tackling climate change and we’ve got a game plan: teaching it to everyone is my day job. And you’ve got to have fun along the way.” The Washington Post agrees, writing “Fine is a storyteller in the mold of Douglas Adams.”

Doug Fine is available for interviews and further speaking engagements in winter/spring 2022. A website of Fine’s print and radio work, United Nations testimony, television appearances and TED Talk is at dougfine.com. Follow him on Instagram and Twitter at @organiccowboy.
