AUSTIN, Texas — “Austin singer/songwriter Shelley King is on a roll,” wrote the Houston Press in picking her show as one of the week’s must-see concerts. She’s on a roll, indeed! Since the release of her 10th album, Madam Mystic, on Lemonade Records in November 2023, King has been basking in the glow of rave reviews from the worldwide press, racking up performances on her busy schedule, and giving back through the Texas Commission on the Arts Rural Tours Initiative.
It’s been a road hard traveled, that she so eloquently put to music and words throughout Madam Mystic. “We’ve all been through difficult times. The last few years have given me a lot of time to consider what’s important and what binds us together. I write songs that might help people through the hard times and also songs that help people celebrate the good times. I want people to laugh, cry, love more, let go and be happy,” says King, winner of two Austin Music Awards, of her latest release.
Fans and critics have received that message with glowing praise. Here’s just a sample of what the press has to say about King, her latest album, and her impassioned live performances…
Rolling Stone: “Deep, gritty blues … fiery guitar and roof-rattling vocals”
Houston Music Review: “Full of blues sensibility [and] touched with sultry sexuality”
Dallas Observer: “Electric Southern blues and acoustic folk, revved-up Cajun country and rock ’n’ roll”
Houston Press: “[Shelley] achieve[s] the rank of Austin royalty”
KXAN: “Carries herself with the strength of a woman who knows how to step up and get it done”
Austin Chronicle: “King’s Earth Mama vocal omnipresence … trips the neon lights fantastic”

The Netherlands’ Bluestown Music: “Shelley proves to be quite a powerhouse singer.”
East Portland Blog: “A fixture in Austin’s famed musical scene, prolific songwriter, and show-stopping singer”

She continues, “The concept of time is challenged. The lyric “we’ve got forever, there’s no now or never” sums it up. “It doesn’t matter how long it takes. I give you all my lovin’, I don’t mind the wait.” The track features Will McFarlane on guitar (recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama) and Cindy Cashdollar on slide solo (recorded in Woodstock, New York.)
Meanwhile, King’s spring is filling up with dates fast. She’s performing a handful of solo shows, as well as dates with Carolyn Wonderland. Her talent, energy, commitment to the craft, and service to the community also led her to be recognized by the Texas Legislature and appointed Official Texas State Musician. The organization has given her a grant to bring her live show to underserved areas of Texas.
