Shelley King Releases Magical Time-Travel Video
For “Time Means Nothing”
The Historic D&F Clock Tower,
the “Crown Jewel of Denver’s Skyline,”

Austin Singer/Songwriter Adds Tour Dates
To Busy Spring Schedule

The King-directed video is shot at — and features heavily — the historic D & F Clock Tower in Downtown Denver’s Historic District, which was built in 1911 and once considered the crown jewel of the Denver skyline. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a Denver Landmark. The video also features elevator scenes shot in Fort Collins, Colorado, and was produced with the Fort Collins-based CSI Films which worked on her videos for “Madam Mystic” and “Building a Fire.”
The “Time Means Nothing” video shows King in an elevator traveling to different floors as a variety of other-era patrons come in. “I came up with the idea of time travel where the elevator is our portal,” explains King. “We travel through time and collect different characters from the past and the future. Maybe we are all trying to get to our destination but as it turns out, the journey through time with the other travelers is the real party. That’s the message — Time doesn’t matter. It’s all about here and now and the experiences we can share together.”
Fans may recognize some of the cast members from her “Madam Mystic” video and from her inner circle. The waiter is played by King’s husband and drummer, Perry Drake, and John Magnie of the New Orleans band the Subdudes plays the quirky part of the magical elevator “conductor.” “John conducts the elevator like a symphony conductor,” says King. “He is the master of the time machine. The first time-traveler is a pioneer woman, my friend Debbie Tolany, who steps right out of an Old West wagon train. The next time traveler is a 1920s’ flapper girl, also played by Debbie, who dances her way into the portal. The next stop is the future, and we pick up a strange being, played by Steve Amedèe of the Subdudes, who drinks champagne through his eye! This character also made a brief cameo in my ‘Building a Fire’ video where he arm-wrestled the devil.”
In the elevator, er, the “time machine,” King and her fellow travelers are not sure what to think about their obvious differences. “But when a cool waiter serving champagne enters the portal, we all agree that this is actually a pretty cool situation and we all dance and enjoy our time together,” adds King.
King says the creative process for coming up with a storyline for a video is very different from the songwriting process. “One thing that I wanted to make sure of was to not be literal,” she explains. “I didn’t want to act out the lyrics. The story in the song is about not rushing through life, but to take the time to be here and now and appreciate where we are. ‘We’ve got forever. There’s no now or never.’ is a lyric. The video ultimately delivers that similar message but with a crazy story.”
King traveled all over the United States and Europe looking for the perfect clock tower for her vision. “I spent an entire EU tour filming clocks,” she says. “The trick was finding one that would allow me to film inside of it. A lot of clock towers have one person that they allow to go up in the clock to do maintenance, etc. Most are not excited about the public having access. When I found the clock tower in Denver, I was already prepared to go just about anywhere to get the clock tower footage, but it was mysteriously cosmic that I found it in Colorado because that is where my film crew and the actors live! Fortunate and perfect!”
King’s been touring non-stop but was able to slip in to shoot the video the week between New Year’s and leaving on the Delbert McClinton Sandy Beaches Cruise out of Florida. “When I walked into the clock tower I was overcome by the beauty of the room,” she adds. “It took my breath away. It was absolutely dreamy to film there.”
